Aquatint
graphic technique that achieves soft, often grainy color tone gradation.
Author printout
print is signed by the author and marked E. A., A. T. Number of prints should not exceed 5-10% of total number of printouts. This is a print in which the author can for example try different color. Often the author creates several copies to archive.
B
Bauhaus
the famous school of Modern Art, which was opened in Germany in 1919 and in 1933 it was closed by the Nazis. It had a significant impact, particularly on architecture and design.

Through new techniques and procedures deals with current topics and issues. The most significant streams include conceptual art, where ideas, concepts are more important than mere aesthetic portrayal of the work. That is why the work is often at first sight difficult to understand and requires a more detailed explanation, reflection and research. It is generally regarded as the art work created after 1960.
D
Digital art
part of the new media. The creation and presentation of works of art using new technologies and informatics. Technology becomes a basic medium and a mean of creating new art forms such as net art, interactive art, virtual reality, electronic arts, new media, cyber art, and more.
Diptych
image consisting of two parts.
Woodcut
the oldest graphic technique in Europe since the second half of the 14th century. One of the most basic printing techniques in which the pattern to be printed is etched into wooden printing blocks. Wood is cut longitudinally from a tree trunk. Drawing is cut mirror-inverted to the smoothed surface stock along the longitudinal lines. A characteristic feature is the contrast of rough lines and surface. Black printing ink is applied to the roller and woodcut prints are attached to paper. This technique is used by most of the prints in the 15th and 16th centuries, especially in illustrated books. At present, it was replaced by the engraving in metal.
E
Etching
graphic technique that is extensively used since the 17th century. First, the author draws the line into the copper plate, which is then covered with acid that makes the deeper traces into the metal plate. It also creates fine, free-flowing line with soft contours. The longer acid operates acid, the darker printing is.
Engraving
term for the graphic techniques including relief printing (woodcut), intaglio printing (copperplate, steel engraving) from surface (lithography) and technique that uses engraving tools (pens, needles).
F
Figurative art
art that depicts recognizable nature, objects and characters. The opposite of abstract art.
Fresco
Italian fresco means "fresh". Painting on wet plaster walls. When it dries, it becomes part of the plaster. This must be done quickly and therefore with absolute certainty, because repairs are not possible. Plaster should be scaled back and start over. Probably the most famous example is Michelangelo's ceiling paintings in the Sistine Chapel.
L
Scumble
transparent top layer of oil paint applied to the lower layer of painting.

Linocut
relief print from a piece of linoleum. Linoleum is soft and thus into it carves more easily than wood. The paint applied in elevated places is finally printed.
Lithograph
became independent in the early 19th century. Graphic technique in which the print form is lithographic stone with a picture applied by lithography chalk. Oily drawing, which reacts chemically with stone, penetrates deep into the stone. Oily ink applied to the moistened stone roller is collected only for oily chalk. Final image looks like it was created with a soft, waxy or greasy pencil.
M
Painting
an important feature is working with color. While drawing is based on a line, painting work with colored areas and passing light and dark places.
Mezzotint
graphic technique, in which copper plate is roughened over the entire surface with engraving. Then with trowel we smooth surface and create non-scheduled drawing, which is white after printing. Using this technology the artist can achieve more saturated shapes. It was very popular during Baroque period.
Monotype
print made by painting on glass, metal or stone plate which is then transferred on the paper. There is a single impression and the original model is destroyed.
O
Oil painting
one of the youngest technique. It originated in the 15th century and in the 16th and 17th centuries was the predominant teqnique. Oil paints are made of pigment powder mixed with oil. Oil causes slow drying which is an advantage compared to other techniques. It allows longer work in wet painting. Oil gives colors shine, depth, brilliance, but also causes the yellowing over time and darkening.
Steel engraving
engraved or etched copper plate is electrolytically covered by steel in order to harden it so it can create multiple impressions. In the process loss of certain subtlety and nuance of the image is possible.
Imprint
print made by pressing sheet or stockel on paper.
P
Painting
an important feature is working with color. While drawing is based on a line, painting work with colored areas and passing light and dark places.
Pastel
powder pigment mixed with clay, rubber or resin. It is applied directly to the paper and is often softened with fingers, which achieves a soft, chalky shade.
Plein air
painting landscapes in the wild (from France En plein air = in the open air).

Serigraphy
a printing method in which the color is passed through soft or silky net with picture. Invented around 1900.
T
Triptych
painting consisting of three parts.
Intaglio printing
indicates the method that involves etching the surface of the metal plate (usually copper). The color is then put on the metal plate, enters the lines and remains there while the rest of the surface remains clean. Then the plate is applied on moist paper and is printed on it. E.g. engraving, drypoint, mezzotint, aquatint ...
Letterpress printing
the oldest set of printing techniques. The principle is that the image is drawn on form and places that are not to be printed are mechanically or chemically removed. Other areas are loaded with ink and pressed against the paper under adequate pressure. The press form can be made of a variety of materials. These techniques are for example: woodcut, wood engraving (xylograph), linocut.
V
Visual Art
