Edmund Gwerk exhibition on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of his birth...

Gwerk 120

Back

The exhibition project was dedicated to the jubilee of painter Edmund Gwerk / 1854 - 1956 /, who was born 120 years ago in Banská Štiavnica.

Gwerk had the courage to live intensely, upstream, not afraid of new beginnings. Otherwise it was not possible in the turbulent early 20th century. He multiplied his talent by hard work. His curiosity and dissatisfaction kept him moving forward as a man and author. Gwerk's mystical visions of the landscape are a combination of the true Expressionism and Baroque drama. He studied the blurry boundaries of art and philosophy.

The exhibition "Gwerk 120" extended the concept of permanent exhibition in the Jozef Kollar Art Gallery of works from the collections of Banská Štiavnica, the Central Slovak Gallery, the Nitra Gallery and private collections. Visitors had the opportunity to see, in addition to well-known pictures, sketches or picture studies and a film documentary. The project also presented authentic documents from the author's estate. The exhibition was a bit of a remembrance of the painter's wife Elizabeth Göllner - Gwerk, who was executed by the German Gestapo in 1944. The aim of the project is to introduce Gwerk to the public in a more plastic way, with an emphasis on the originality of his search for fulfillment.
