...the current Night Watch, which can be seen in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, is smaller than the work painted by Rembrandt. In 1715, probably after the end of the guard's activities, the painting was moved to the Military Council Hall of the Amsterdam City Hall. However, the space was too small for the painting and so it had to be reduced. The upper and most of the left part of the painting was removed, which brought the main characters into even greater focus. The original version has been preserved thanks to a small copy of the work, the author of which is Gerrit Lundens. He probably painted it sometime after 1642.
