On October 26, 2022, the 13th Ambassador of Japan Award was awarded to Slovak painter, graphic artist and illustrator Dušan Kállay. The academic painter was awarded for his long-term contribution to the deepening of friendship, mutual relations and exchanges in the field of culture between Japan and Slovakia.
Dušan Kállay illustrated more than 200 books. Among his illustrated books are Klára Jarunková's Wanderer, Mária Ďuríčková's Virgin's Tower, Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales, Pavel Dobšinský's Slovak Fairy Tales and Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. His work is part of important art collections around the world. He is the recipient of many awards.
The Ambassador of Japan Award is given to individuals, bodies or institutions whose activities significantly contribute to mutual understanding and the deepening of friendly relations between Japan and foreign countries. In Slovakia, the Ambassador of Japan Award was awarded for the first time in 2014.
